River Region’s origins can be traced to the late 1960s.
Housed in a hotel across the street from Jacksonville’s old train station, the Life Drug Treatment Program provided prevention services and residential, outpatient, and methadone treatment services to the community. In 1972, twenty-one different federally funded substance abuse treatment programs in the region were consolidated into the agency.
Federal grants continued to be the primary funding source, but the City of Jacksonville was investing increasing resources in drug treatment and prevention services. The City’s Mental Health Department took over the management of the Life Program and created the Jacksonville Drug Abuse Program (JDAP). This arrangement continued until 1979, when community leaders decided that drug treatment services could be provided more effectively through a contracted partner. JDAP then became the private non-profit provider, River Region Human Services, Inc.
River Region now provides comprehensive substance abuse treatment, intervention, and prevention services to people living in Duval, Clay, Nassau, St. Johns, and Baker Counties, as well as mental health and HIV/AIDS services. Many of River Region’s programs have been internationally accredited by The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF) since 1993. The management and direction of River Region is established by a community volunteer Board of Directors that meets bi-monthly. River Region has an active quality improvement system, and continually evaluates and enhances programs to improve outcomes.
River Region has been serving Northeast Florida since 1972.
